Members of the State Duma took part in the 11th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in the capital of Brazil, as it is Brazil’s chairmanship in 2025. The motto of the Forum is “Strengthening Global Cooperation of the South for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance.”
The First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Alexander Zhukov
Alexander Dmitrievich
addressed the participants at the session “BRICS
Parliamentary Action in Search of New Paths for Economic Development.”
He noted that it would be no exaggeration to call the BRICS countries the driving forces of the global economy, and according to the parliamentarian, “the current international financial, trade and monetary systems do not fully reflect modern realities.”
“Therefore, we support the call to the parliaments of the BRICS countries to reform the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Underrepresentation of developing countries does not allow these organizations to function in the interests of the global majority,” said Alexander Zhukov.
“It is important to continue our action aimed at increasing the use of national currencies in mutual payments. By the end of 2024, the share of Russia's payments with the BRICS countries in national currencies reached 85%. The share of USD as a tool of our mutual trade is constantly decreasing,” added the First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma.
Alexander Zhukov emphasized: “The role of legislators in the implementation of our common goals is huge. The parliaments of the BRICS countries can make a significant contribution to our joint work. The exchange of best practices in legislative regulation, harmonization of approaches and the creation of the necessary legal framework could provide great support to the collective efforts aimed at strengthening trade and economic cooperation, finding new ways of economic development of our countries.”
After Alexander Zhukov's speech, member of the Chamber of Deputies of the National Congress of Brazil Fausto Pinato, who chaired the session, noted the contribution, “bravery and courage” of Russian President Vladimir Putin. “This is the country that I admire very much,” the Brazilian parliamentarian said about Russia.
The member of the Committee
on International Affairs Roza Chemeris
Roza Basirovna
spoke at a session on the topic of empowering women to face the climate crisis. “Russia is one of the leaders in the international climate process both in terms of its contribution to reducing
greenhouse gas emissions and in terms of efforts aimed at ensuring the universality of the climate regime under the auspices of the UN Framework
Convention on Climate Change,” she said.
“At the same time, we would like to urge all participants to avoid climate alarmism and references to the so-called “climate crisis.” We are convinced that escalating the situation around the global climate without taking into account objective scientific data does not contribute to constructive discussion and the development of effective joint solutions that do not affect sustainable development,” emphasized Roza Chemeris.
