Members of the State Duma at a plenary meeting on May 11 adopted the draft law “On ratification of the Agreement between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Kazakhstan on military cooperation.” The bill was submitted by the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin.
The new agreement on military cooperation between the two countries was signed in Nur-Sultan in October 2020 at the meeting of the Defense Ministers of Russia and Kazakhstan.
According to the provisions of the agreement, military cooperation will include a wide range of issues, such as military education and training, the supply of weapons and equipment, participation in joint bilateral and multilateral exercises, and other military training events. Cooperation will also include such areas as peacekeeping, improving the bilateral regulatory framework, culture and sports.
The parties agreed to hold negotiations and consultations on issues of regional security and joint use of troops, holding conferences, seminars and symposiums. Warships visiting and joint combat trainings are also included in the agreement. The agreement emphasizes that it is not directed against any other state.
The new agreement was concluded for 10 years with the possibility of automatic extension for subsequent ten-year periods.
