The Commission of the State Duma on the Investigation of Foreign Interference in Russia's Internal Affairs sent a request to the Prosecutor General’s Office to react to the publication of articles in the New York Times and the Financial Times, as well as in several foreign Russian-language media about alleged non-compliance of the official data on mortality rate in Russia due to coronavirus with real statistics. This was announced by Chairman of the Commission Vasilii Piskarev Piskarev Vasily Ivanovich Piskarev

“We reviewed the publications of these English-language newspapers, and also identified several foreign Russian-language resources, including those oriented towards several Russian regions, spreading the destructive false information published by the New York Times and the Financial Times among the Russian audience,” the parliamentarian explained. As examples, he cited foreign media outlets such as MBK-Media, TV channel “Current Time” and media resource “Caucasus. Realities“, which act as foreign agents.

“It is noteworthy that already after a denial of fake news launched in the media space came from several official Russian sources, several foreign media continue to relay it to the Russian audience. We believe that such publications are no less dangerous for society, therefore, they should be given a proper legal assessment in accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation,” emphasized Vasilii Piskarev.
