On June 4, 2019, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Ivan Melnikov and head of the Communist Party faction in the State Duma Gennady Zyuganov received the leadership of the Brazilian Workers’ Party, headed by former President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff.
During the meeting, issues of interstate, inter-parliamentary and inter-party cooperation between the two countries were discussed.
It was noted that Brazil continues to remain the most important Russian partner both on the Latin American continent and in the foreign policy system in general.
At the meeting, it was stressed that Russia and Brazil need to maintain ”the positive attitude that has developed between two countries during the period when the Workers’ Party is in power.“ “We shall pay the great tribute for our good relations to [the ex-president of Brazil, the founder of the party] Lula da Silva and you, Ms. Rousseff. As president, you came to our country and signed a lot of important documents on cooperation in various spheres,” said Ivan Melnikov.
